Dick DeVos and his wife founded the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation. The foundation operates out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It donates millions of dollars to artistic, religious, educational, civic, community and free economic organizations. It has many grantees and consistently demonstrates the ability to work with several different types of organizations in order to achieve the desired goal. The Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation has done work with the Regional Air Alliance of West Michigan, the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Kids Hope USA, and West Michigan Aviation Academy.
The West Michigan Aviation Academy is the first of its kind in the nation. It is a charter high school that opened in 2010. Betsy DeVos is credited with the idea for the school. She and Dick DeVos are both extremely passionate about education and Dick has a love for flying. They decided to combine both of these concepts. The school sits on the facilities of the Gerald R Ford International Airport.
Dick and Betsy DeVos established the school as a charter school in order to avoid charging tuition. This gives every type of student the opportunity to attend a unique academy at no cost. It is something that is very important to the DeVos family.
Dick DeVos was born and raised in Michigan. He is the son of Richard DeVos Sr. Richard DeVos Sr founded Amway in the basement of his home. It went on to become a multi billion-dollar company. Dick DeVos was very involved with the company at an early age. He and his siblings assisted with menial tasks as the company operated out of the home.
DeVos went on to attend Northwood University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree. He also had brief stays at Harvard Business School and Wharton College. He began working with his father’s company in 1974. Dick DeVos moved around to various positions as he ascended the ranks of the corporation. After 10 years of diligent work DeVos was appointed as one of the company’s vice presidents. He had responsibilities that included 18 different countries. DeVos’s leadership opened new markets and increased foreign sales. In fact foreign sales would surpass domestic sales for the first time in the company’s history under Dick DeVos’s leadership.
The DeVos family acquired the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association. Richard DeVos divided ownership of the franchise evenly among his children. Dick DeVos assumed official duties with the team. However, he eventually would return to Amway to become President of the organization.
